Recording your screen with sound, without installing anything: what to switch on
For a how-to, a bug report or a class you want to keep, this page uses the screen-sharing feature built into your browser to record an entire screen, a single window or a tab. There is no watermark and no time limit, and the recording only reaches your computer when you press Save. To capture sound as well, a couple of settings need to be right before you start.
A closer look
Pressing Start recording opens the browser’s picker for what to share. The page asks for 30 frames per second at about 8 Mbps, so a screen with lots of motion can approach 60 MB per minute, and because the resolution is whatever you share, a high-resolution monitor makes larger files. The recording is saved as MP4 (H.264) when your browser supports it, otherwise as WebM. Until you save, the data sits in this tab’s memory, so for sessions of several hours, stop and save roughly every hour, and do not close or reload the tab while recording.
Sound comes from two places. Computer sound only comes in if you turn on the audio-sharing switch in the picker: choosing a tab shares that tab’s sound, and on Windows, choosing the entire screen can share all system audio. On a Mac, tab audio is usually the only option, and picking a single window often offers no audio at all. Your own voice is added by ticking the microphone box before you start; when both are present, they are mixed into one track and cannot be separated later.
How to use it
- If you will narrate, tick Also record my microphone first. The browser asks separately for microphone access when recording starts.
- Press Start recording and choose an entire screen, a window or a tab in the picker. For computer sound, turn on the audio switch in the same dialog, then press Share.
- While recording, a red dot blinks next to the timer. If the status says it is “Currently recording video only (no sound)”, stop right away, change the settings, and start again.
- Press Stop on this page or Stop sharing in the browser’s bar. A player appears; check the recording and press Save to download a file named like “screen-recording_20260927_1430.mp4”.
When it helps
Common snags
Tip When you record the entire screen, chat and email notifications are captured too, so turn on your operating system’s Do Not Disturb or Focus mode, or record just the tab you need.
FAQ
Does it record computer (system) sound?
Yes. In the picker that appears when you start, choose a tab and enable "Also share audio" to capture that tab's sound. On Windows you can also share system audio when picking the entire screen (on macOS only tab audio is available). Turn on the microphone checkbox above to mix your voice in as well.
Is there a watermark or time limit?
Neither. Longer recordings just make bigger files. For multi-hour sessions we recommend saving in chunks of about an hour to keep browser memory happy.
Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. Recording and saving happen entirely in your browser — the video never leaves your device.
What format is the recording saved in?
MP4 when your browser supports recording it, otherwise WebM. If you got WebM and need MP4, use the WebM to MP4 converter — it takes seconds.
Does it work on phones?
Mobile browsers don't support screen capture, so use Chrome or Edge on a computer. On iPhone and Android, use the screen recorder built into the OS (Control Center / Quick Settings).
